YesLiberia and YMCA of Liberia are two youth development organizations dedicated to educating, training, and empowering Liberian youth for future leadership. Both organizations have partnered for advancing education for Liberian youth. This collaboration has given birth to a scholarship initiative to fund the education of most needy students enrolled in schools operated by the YMCA in Liberia in the following communities: Paynesville in Montserrado County, Unification Town and Kakata in Margibi County, Ganta in Nimba County, and Zorzor in Lofa County. Below are members of the Scholarship Committee who are responsible for all preliminary application processes, applicants vetting, and documentations across Liberia.
Vonyee, a 12 years employee, has gone from the level of intern to the role of a staff member, at the largest branch of YMCA in Liberia—where she is responsible for managing the branch in Monrovia as the coordinator.
Amongst other responsibilities, Vonyee managed a Youth Cluster Program comprising of five other national youth organizations in Liberia to promote peace building, advocacy, and the advancement of young people’s role in community development.
Based on her illustrious work with the youth in 2010, Vonyee was vetted by the Federation of Liberian Youth and decorated by the President of the Republic of Liberia, with the title of The Grade of Chevalier of the Star of Africa. She was subsequently named Social Worker and Peace Advocate, Republic of Liberia.
Vonyee has proven skills and abilities in teamwork, organization and networking. She brings to tasks commitment and results-oriented focus— both qualities have helped her grow at the YMCA and win confidence of her peers and other stakeholders. She is certainly an excellent asset to the Scholarship Committee and will manage the YMCA and YesLiberia’s partnership for educating youth across Liberia.
Alston is a social worker and a devoted YMCA volunteer. His involvement with youth and community services goes far back to May 2001 when he joined the YMCA as a volunteer. Ever since, Alston has worked with the YMCA in many different areas including adolescent health program, civic engagement, and political participation, peace building, leadership development, and counseling. Coming from an uncertain and difficult beginning, like many Liberian youth, he has risen against all odds to position himself as an aspiring leader, a mentor, and a social worker– contributing to post-war development efforts in Liberia.
In 2013, Alston earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the Stella Maris Polytechnic College and a BA in sociology from University of Liberia. He also earned a Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Procurement Management from the University of Liberia in 2015. He currently works with the Ministry of Education of Liberia.
Alston is committed to promoting education for Liberian youth. He volunteers to teach at community schools in Liberia. At the YMCA, he mentors young people and inspires them to pursue education. He is very passionate about programs that promote academic excellence among Liberian youth. Alston will be an excellent addition to this Scholarship Committee.
