Library Construction

With a literacy rate of 57%*, Liberia’s educational struggles are a cause of grave concern.  Lack of public libraries for students limit the level of cultural exposure to global citizen diplomacy within the country and leaves students less trusting and open to other enriching experiences.  Instead of stories being read from books, stories are told from memories of elders. 

In the US however, many students are exposed to reading at early ages.  There are a plethora of public libraries with books available to expand the imaginations of the most impressionable.  While the literacy lacking in Liberia is unheard of in the US, the traditional meaningful storytelling element may be absent.

In short, the abundant opportunity on one side of the globe is a profuse challenge on the other end of the globe. The "Creating Global Best Friends Forever" (Creating Global BFF) Program, a unique initiative of YESLiberia, was created to foster a more literate society through the establishment of a library in Liberia and to promote cultural engagement with children in the US. Through various activities presented in Creating Global BFF Program, young people will come to understand and embrace the challenges and opportunities of diverse cultures without leaving their countries. YESLiberia is passionate about the possibilities that Creating Global BFF would bring to the youths between ages 5 and 18 in Liberia and the USA. We believes that this program is an exemplar program in that it merges tradition with innovation, combines fun with fact, and measures expectations with experience. If you are interested in funding this idea or seeking funding for implementation, you may join our staff or contact us for more details.
